Medical Billing Interview Preparation: Part 1

Are you currently searching for a job in the Medical Billing & Coding field? Here are a few tips to help ensure that you’re prepared.

You’ve finished your education with Laurus College (congratulations!) and now you’re ready to get that Medical Billing job you’ve been dreaming about.

Even if you don’t have an interview scheduled yet, it’s never too early to start preparing. After all, sometimes it only takes one great interview to land the job! In “Part 1” of this 3-part series, we’ll be covering common questions asked during interviews. Take a moment to review the following questions and make sure to write down your answers ahead of time before your next interview:

COMMON QUESTIONS

“Do you happen to have an extra copy of your resume?”

Interviewers may have lost your resume among the hundreds submitted for your position or had trouble downloading it from their Applicant Tracking Software. An interviewer may also be using this question to test your preparation…and by extension, your interest in the position.

Plan to have at least three (3) copies of your resume in the event you are walking into a panel interview. Having extra copies of a well-prepared reference sheet and your cover letter is also highly recommended.

Tell Me About Yourself….???

Whatever you do, don’t “wing it” and don’t tell the interviewer your “life story”. Instead, prepare a 30-second response to this question that includes your:

1) Relevant Experience

Example:

“I worked in retail which gave me great customer service experience and I learned how to turn upset customers into happy customers!”

2) Education and Training

Example:

“I graduated from Laurus College with Professional Business Systems and Medical Billing Certificates. I also have five (5) specialty certificates and I’m planning on getting more.”

3) Excellence and Expertise

Example:

“I’m naturally very precise and accurate.”

4) Excitement about the position

Example:

“I really enjoy interacting with doctors, patients, and insurance companies to solve problems and get good results for all the parties involved.”

Other Commonly Asked Questions Include:

– Why did you decide to go into medical billing?
– Where do you see yourself in five (5) years?
– Which part of medical billing do you like least?
– Which part of medical billing do you like most?
– What are your strengths?
– What are your weaknesses?
